School of Government
The School of Government’s mission is to improve the lives of North Carolinians by engaging in practical scholarship that helps public officials and citizens understand and improve state and local government.
Each year, the School of Government provides more than 200 courses and programs to over 12,000 public officials across all 100 North Carolina counties, offers advising and legislative support to government leaders, and produces scholarship that strengthens governance statewide. The school also is home to the nationally recognized UNC Master of Public Administration (MPA) program, which prepares public service leaders and provides usable knowledge to improve governance.
The mission of the Law, Government, and Public Service Minor is to develop critical thinking skills for understanding and analyzing the laws and structures that support government and nonprofit organizations. This minor offers undergraduate students an early opportunity to engage with the legal and organizational systems that shape government and public service work. The curriculum is designed for students interested in law, public administration, public policy, and other related fields, preparing them for future careers in public service. The learning objectives of the minor are as follows:
- Understand the basic sources and structures of law, including constitutional, statutory, and case law.
- Learn to craft, analyze, and evaluate legal arguments.
- Apply public management theories that inform the ways that government and nonprofit organizations meet public needs.
- Analyze the impact of the institutional dynamics and interactions of public service organizations at the local, state, and national levels.
- Understand how law and government affect daily life.
