Asian Studies–Interdisciplinary Concentration, A.A.-B.A.
This is a suggested course plan. It is highly recommended that you meet regularly with your academic advisor to determine your course selection and progress toward graduation.
Students who transfer to UNC under the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) have all lower-level General Education requirements completed, but must complete these requirements through transfer or UNC coursework: Global Language, Research and Discovery, Lifetime Fitness, Communication Beyond Carolina, Campus Life Experience, and, where applicable, Supplemental General Education. Students who do not transfer in under the CAA should work closely with their advisor to determine which requirements apply to them for the IDEAs in Action General Education curriculum.
This catalog also includes a complete list of requirements for the Asian Studies major, B.A.–Interdisciplinary Concentration degree.

Required in the Major

The first three levels of language can count toward the General Education Global Language requirement and have not been included as additional hours for the major.
- 3
Asian or Middle Eastern languages available at NCCCs: Arabic, Chinese, and Japanese. Additional Asian or Middle Eastern languages are available at UNC–Chapel Hill; reference the department's course list for available options.
The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies requires that all students with prior knowledge of a language take a placement test. The beginning language course at UNC is decided by the placement (not by test credit or transfer credit). So students who have taken Arabic, Chinese, or Japanese at NCCCs will need to take a placement test if they wish to continue their language study at UNC–Chapel Hill. Students are encouraged to take all four levels of the language at the NCCC if they are able. One additional course above 204 may be counted as a major course in the interdisciplinary concentration.
Students who wish to take a different Asian or Middle Eastern language should be aware that
- The beginning (101) courses are offered in fall, not spring;
- Placement test will be required for anyone with prior background, whether from formal study or not;
- Some languages are sometimes offered in summer, so there may be opportunities to start the chosen language the summer before the first fall at UNC–Chapel Hill.
- Almost all language courses are offered in either fall or spring, but not both, so placement level will determine whether a student can start the language in fall or spring, and failing to take the correct level when offered will usually mean a year’s delay.
- 4
All NC Community College Language courses numbered 211 are approved to transfer to UNC-Chapel Hill as a course that completes the GLBL-LANG IDEAs in Action requirement.

Required in the Major. Eight total courses are required that must meet five potentially overlapping criteria. Please see the program requirements for full details and course lists. Meeting with a departmental advisor is required each fall, and contacting the department upon acceptance to discuss course choices for the first fall is strongly recommended.

If student did not complete through level four of an Asian or Middle Eastern Language at the NCCC, they can use elective hours on the above plan to complete the four levels of the language.
Students should be aware that
- The beginning (101) courses are offered in fall, not spring;
- Placement test will be required for anyone with prior background, whether from formal study or not;
- Some languages are sometimes offered in summer, so there may be opportunities to start the chosen language the summer before the first fall at UNC–Chapel Hill.
