Asian Studies–Japanese Concentration, A.A.-B.A.

This is a suggested course plan. It is highly recommended that you meet regularly with your academic advisor to determine your course selection and progress toward graduation.

Students who transfer to UNC under the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) have all lower-level General Education requirements completed, but must complete these requirements through transfer or UNC coursework: Global Language, Research and Discovery, Lifetime Fitness, Communication Beyond Carolina, Campus Life Experience, and, where applicable, Supplemental General Education. Students who do not transfer in under the CAA should work closely with their advisor to determine which requirements apply to them for the IDEAs in Action General Education curriculum.

This catalog also includes a complete list of requirements for the Asian Studies–Japanese Concentration B.A. degree.

The beginning language course at UNC is decided by the placement (not by test credit or transfer credit). Students are encouraged to take all four levels of the language at the NCCC if they are able.

The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies requires that all students with prior knowledge of Japanese take a placement test. The beginning language course at UNC is decided by the placement (not by test credit or transfer credit).

This pathway assumes an initial placement of JAPN 305, but that is not guaranteed even for students who have taken four semesters of Japanese at community college.  A student whose initial placement is below JAPN 305 could still complete this major by studying abroad or taking extra semesters at UNC–Chapel Hill.

  • The full list of advanced Japanese and culture courses can be found in the major requirements.
  • Students are required to take at least three advanced Japanese courses and at least two culture courses and the final course can be selected from either list.
  • No more than one senior honors thesis course may be included among the culture courses.
